Faculty & Staff Wellness Program Workshops this Month

Eating for Heart Health with Madia Jamgochian

Friday, June 14th, 12:00 - 1:00 p.m.

We are a heart-sick society, with heart disease being the leading cause of death for both men and women in America, coming in at a whopping 655,000 deaths per year. This class will cover the different forms of cardiovascular disease as well as risk factors involved. Madia will discuss what constitutes a heart healthy food, and why antioxidants, fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins and minerals are important key players. Learn how to combat inflammation to prevent heart disease and why cholesterol needs to be redeemed as a necessary part of human health.

This workshop will be presented by Madia Jamgochian. Madia graduated from Bauman College of Holistic Nutrition in 2013 after completing her BA in Environmental Studies and Exercise Sports Science at UCSB. Shortly after, she started her personal consulting business My Healing Habits. She enjoys educating on how to heal inflammatory and autoimmune conditions, and believes in the food-as-medicine approach. Please note this meeting will be recorded.

UCSC Diabetes Prevention Program: 

Starting July 11th

Did you know that one in three Americans has a condition called prediabetes—and 90% of them don’t know it?
Prediabetes is a health condition that not only puts you at risk for type 2 diabetes, it also puts you at risk of heart disease, stroke and Alzheimer’s disease. Several health factors can increase your risk of developing prediabetes or type 2 diabetes, such as weight, inactivity, a history of gestational diabetes, or a family history of type 2 diabetes.

UC Health has developed a new program called the University of California Diabetes Prevention Program (UC DPP) to help people with prediabetes and those who are at risk for type 2 diabetes decrease their risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This program is a free on-campus resource for UC faculty, staff and their families. 
The UC Diabetes Prevention Program is a campus-based, small-group program that uses a scientifically based approach developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to help you make important lifestyle changes. Trained lifestyle coaches lead 22 one-hour sessions over the course of a year in which you’ll learn healthy habits that stick, including how to lose up to 5% to 7% of your weight—and keep it off—while significantly reducing your chance of developing type 2 diabetes.
