Faculty & Staff Wellness Program Workshops this Month

Workshop Series with Silvia Austerlic: Compassionate Listening Presence from the Inside Out: Self-Care, Service, and Community Building

As the Dalai Lama says, compassion is no longer a luxury, it is essential for our human survival. The intelligence of the heart is confirmed in research in the field of Neurocardiology. Cultivating the wisdom of the heart is the key to real peace from the inside out. Listening may seem like such a simple and natural act. However, Compassionate Listening can be very demanding, and involves respect for, and loving awareness of the presence and expressions of another human being. Compassionate listening presence relies on strengthening the influence of the heart through cultivating compassion for ourselves and others, while learning to “show up” and “be present” in caring supportive ways. It’s important to learn how to stay present and open in times of crisis, navigate conflict, work with our judgments and triggers, and humanize those we think of as "other.” These are life-long practices that serve in all relationships ‐ as a co‐worker, friend, and leader. They can guide you to heal troubled relationships, and strengthen peace-making skills in daily life.

Part 3: Celebrating a Community Listening Circle: Listening as Community Building
Friday, March 12th, 12:00 p.m. - 1:15 p.m.
When upsetting events happen in the world, they trigger strong feelings in many of us—sadness, anger, fear, confusion, worry. We tend to carry these feelings around with use through the day. Authentic communication, speaking and listening with/from the heart, is built around and is supported by the other essential human behaviors: respect, trust, care, curiosity, and patience. The purpose of this session is to experience a “safe and brave space” for speaking and listening from the heart, and engaging in authentic conversations that help engender mutual understanding and support among people in stressful times, and create community at a time when it’s most needed.
In this workshop, you will:
- Speak from the heart with language that reflects a healing intention
- Listen with the heart - allow divergence and find a deeper point of connection
- Develop understanding and appreciation of one another's beliefs and perspectives
- Increase capacity to be present and connect with self and others

This series will be presented by Silvia Austerlic, an intercultural educator, facilitator and consultant @ Senti-Pensante Connections. She is a working member of the Radical Resilience Initiative and a lecturer for Oakes College where she developed and teaches a class titled “Building an inner sanctuary” about the cultivation of inner and external resources in order to show up for social justice and community care. She also facilitates campus-wide learning events surrounding cultural humility, social justice, and fostering care in the community.

Heart Healthy Eating Workshop: Friday, March 19th, 12pm-1pm

We are a heart-sick society, with heart disease being the leading cause of death for both men and women in America, coming in at a whopping 655,000 deaths per year. This class will cover the different forms of cardiovascular disease as well as risk factors involved. Madia will discuss what constitutes a heart healthy food, and why antioxidants, fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins and minerals are important key players. Learn how to combat inflammation to prevent heart disease and why cholesterol needs to be redeemed as a necessary part of human health.

This workshop will be presented by Madia Jamgochian. Madia graduated from Bauman College of Holistic Nutrition in 2013 after completing her BA in Environmental Studies and Exercise Sports Science at UCSB. Shortly after, she started her personal consulting business My Healing Habits. She enjoys educating on how to heal inflammatory and autoimmune conditions, and believes in the food-as-medicine approach.

Please note this meeting will be recorded.
