How does your mental attitude and emotional state affect your physical health? Many studies now have proven that the way we think will have an enormous influence over how our body behaves, how our immune system functions, and how our physical and mental health maintains in general.

This presentation will address just how our mind contributes to (or sabotages) our health and general well-being. Learn simple techniques on how to improve health and well-being by enlisting the mind as an ally rather than an adversary.

The Inside Job of Compassionate Listening - Listening as Self-Care with Silvia Austerlic: 

Wednesday, March 22nd, 12 - 1 p.m.

Listening to ourselves is a vital part of our ability to understand who we are, communicate with others, and succeed in life. Our cultural, personal and professional lives are often determined by the “quality of attention” we pay to ourselves and others. The purpose of this session is to explore and develop the capacity of listening in as an act of self-care, by becoming aware of your internal state, needs and potential.  Learn the components of listening that support peace of mind and well-being, nourishing and deepening your capacity to be present for yourself and others.

This workshop series will be presented by Silvia Austerlic, an intercultural educator, facilitator and consultant @ Senti-Pensante Connections. She is a working member of the Radical Resilience Initiative and a lecturer for Oakes College where she developed and teaches a class titled “Building an inner sanctuary” about the cultivation of inner and external resources in order to show up for social justice and community care. She also facilitates campus-wide learning events surrounding cultural humility, social justice, and fostering care in the community.

Heart Healthy Eating with Madia Jamgochian: 

Thursday, March 30th, 12 - 1 p.m.

We are a heart-sick society, with heart disease being the leading cause of death for both men and women in America, coming in at a whopping 655,000 deaths per year. This class will cover the different forms of cardiovascular disease as well as risk factors involved. Madia will discuss what constitutes a heart healthy food, and why antioxidants, fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins and minerals are important key players. Learn how to combat inflammation to prevent heart disease and why cholesterol needs to be redeemed as a necessary part of human health.

This workshop will be presented by Madia Jamgochian. Madia graduated from Bauman College of Holistic Nutrition in 2013 after completing her BA in Environmental Studies and Exercise Sports Science at UCSB. Shortly after, she started her personal consulting business My Healing Habits. She enjoys educating on how to heal inflammatory and autoimmune conditions, and believes in the food-as-medicine approach.
