Faculty & Staff Wellness Program Workshops this Month

Caring for Yourself in Times of Grief and Loss: Friday, May 14th, 12 p.m. - 1:15 p.m.

Death is a part of life, and grief is the natural response to death and loss. During these unprecedented times of crisis, disruption, and turmoil, even if you haven't lost a close loved one, it is understandable to feel individual and collective grief. People have experienced the loss of choices, freedom, job security, financial security, and routine, among many things. This workshop will help participants learn about the various components of grief, recognize their own signs and symptoms of grief from a physical, emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and spiritual perspective, and identify healing coping strategies.

Learning Objectives:
- Understand the nature of grief and the healing potential of grief work.
- Recognize their own signs and symptoms of grief from a physical, emotional/psychological, behavioral, and spiritual perspective.
- Identify ways of coping with grief.
- Know when and how to ask for support.

This workshop series will be presented by Silvia Austerlic, an intercultural educator, facilitator and consultant @ Senti-Pensante Connections. She is a working member of the Radical Resilience Initiative and a lecturer for Oakes College where she developed and teaches a class titled “Building an inner sanctuary” about the cultivation of inner and external resources in order to show up for social justice and community care. She also facilitates campus-wide learning events surrounding cultural humility, social justice, and fostering care in the community.

Seeds, Beans, and Grains: Friday, May 21st, 12 p.m. - 1 p.m.

How much do you know about seeds? Although you may not have stopped to think about it, we live in a world of seeds - from our morning coffee, to the slice of toast with breakfast, to the cotton clothes we wear and the piece of chocolate we had for dessert, seeds supply us all day long. Seeds (as well as beans and grains) can be an important source of nutrition. Join Madia for this class to learn about health benefits, how to soak them, and the point of sprouting.

This workshop will be presented by Madia Jamgochian. Madia graduated from Bauman College of Holistic Nutrition in 2013 after completing her BA in Environmental Studies and Exercise Sports Science at UCSB. Shortly after, she started her personal consulting business My Healing Habits. She enjoys educating on how to heal inflammatory and autoimmune conditions, and believes in the food-as-medicine approach.

Please note this meeting will be recorded.

Supporting Others in Times of Grief and Loss: Friday, May 28th, 12 p.m. - 1:15 p.m.

Along the journey of life, every person will experience grief and loss, a profound sense of final separation from something or someone important. While there are similarities in how individuals work through loss, grief is a complex and unique experience that requires to be sensitive to the personal needs and experiences of those we support. This workshop is designed to give people an increased awareness of the dynamics of grief, and to provide tools and strategies to be a compassionate healing presence for someone who is grieving. Cultural understanding of grief and coping strategies will be explored.

Learning Objectives:
- Explore cultural factors that shape how grief is experienced.
- Increase your capacity to create safety and trust for those who are grieving.
- Develop more confidence in establishing supportive communication with those who are grieving.
- Develop compassionate healing presence within yourself and within supportive relationships with those who are grieving.

Diabetes Prevention Program: New Cohort Starts in July

Prediabetes is a health condition that not only puts you at risk for type 2 diabetes, it also puts you at risk of heart disease, stroke and Alzheimer’s disease. Several health factors can increase your risk of developing prediabetes or type diabetes, such as weight, inactivity, a history of gestational diabetes, or family history of type 2 diabetes.

UC Health has developed a new program called the University of California Diabetes Prevention Program (UC DPP) to help people with prediabetes and those who are at risk for type diabetes decrease their risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This program is a free on-campus resource for UC faculty, staff and their families.

Enroll in the UC Diabetes Prevention Program

The UC Diabetes Prevention Program is a campus-based, small-group program that uses a scientifically based approach developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to help you make important lifestyle changes. Trained lifestyle coaches lead 22 one-hour sessions over the course of a year in which you’ll learn healthy habits that stick, including how to lose up to 5% to 7% of your weightand keep it offwhile significantly reducing your chance of developing type 2 diabetes. Click here for more details.

For more information about UCSC's DPP program, be sure to watch the recorded information session here
